A participatory workshop exploring the social and political applications of biodesign.

About the project:

Synthetic biology offers a radical vision for design: people will be able to design, remix and compose new organisms tailored to their needs and those of others. If synthetic biology leaves the lab, what types of custom organisms would members of the public create? and for what purpose?

Biodesign for Social Impact investigates the potential for biotechnologies to alter the social and political landscapes of our future. During the workshop, participants constructed speculative futures and designed novel organisms inspired by current news articles and the affordances of biotechnologies.

The workshop has been delivered at Dutch Design Week, TU Delft and The University of Edinburgh.
